Dear Co-Active Coaches,

As summer winds down, we're beginning our annual preparations for the ICF conference being held this November in Quebec City. If you're planning to attend, be sure to stop by our booth and say "Hi." We'll tell you more about our plans as the conference gets closer.

If discussions about research on the effectiveness of coaching intrigue you, check out the pre-conference Research Symposium. Marcia Dorfman, CPCC, is on the PR committee and shares some information about the symposium in CTI News.

Celebration

In addition to being the site of the ICF conference this year, Canada is also the site of another expansion of Co-Activity. In CTI News, read about our new partnership with the University of Calgary.

Our topic this month is coaching in organizations. Susan Clark, CPCC, tells us about the benefits, challenges and rewards of coaching within an organization and the success of bringing Co-Active coaching into Fairview Health Services. Joseph Seiler, CPCC, takes a look at the interaction of words and intention in bringing employees to maximum performance.

Also in this issue, read about a few of the many activities happening in the Co-Active Network and join us in celebrating our newest CPCCs. Enjoy!

Warmly,
Kathy Wilson, CPCC

We send a huge "Thank you!" to Bev Knox, CPCC, MCC, and Maureen Motter-Hodgson, CPCC, who were instrumental in making this happen.

To enroll, contact the university directly at 403-220-2877 or enroll through its website. Prices are in Canadian dollars and may differ from CTI's prices.

ICF Coaching Research Symposium
Do plan to attend the ICF pre-conference 2nd Annual Coaching Research Symposium, on November 3, 2004, in Quebec City. Last year, this event at the Denver conference was sold out.

The Symposium is bringing together coaching scholars, researchers, practitioners and clients to share ideas and build community to move the field and the profession of coaching forward. It is expected to shape the coaching research agenda for years to come.

You'll hear presentations and participate in discussions on what research means to practicing coaches, to the profession of coaching and to coach training organizations. Should coaching be evidence-based? Should all coaches be expected to do research? How necessary is it that coaching be able to prove that it is effective? Must coaching develop a transdisciplinary theory in order to become a full profession? Are there methods that are particularly suited to coaching? How do we overcome an all-too-common fear of research?

Highlights of the day-long event are:

  • Keynote speaker: Dr. Dianne Stober
  • Panel discussion: How do we move the state of coaching research and the field of coaching studies forward?
  • Research showcases:
    • Presentations of recently completed coaching and coaching-related research;
    • Poster sessions presented by active researchers and theorists.
  • Networking: Group discussions on topics of common interest based on the day's presentations and personal perspectives.

Registration: Visit the ICF website, www.coachfederation.org, on the 9th Annual ICF Conference Pre-Conference Workshop registration page. Attendance fee of $109 U.S. includes networking lunch and Symposium proceedings.

A Coaching in Organizations Success Story
Coaching inside an organization provides benefits, challenges and rewards. If the coaching service is well defined and positioned, the coach is never at a loss for clients. Susan Clark's employer, Fairview Health Services, has provided a welcoming and supportive environment for co-active coaching. To launch this internal benefit, Susan and her colleague, Mary Stultz, simply contacted senior leaders within Fairview, told them about the work they were doing and asked to do some sample coaching with them. As you all know, the Co-Active model works! The senior leaders not only appreciated the coaching they were receiving but started sending them more clients. Susan, a CPCC, shares the exciting results of her efforts, as well as some of the factors critical to that success. Read the article.

What Is the Calling at Work?
When we "call" to each other, are we calling forth, calling out or calling down? Joseph Seiler, CPCC, explores how the same words can have a totally different result depending on the intention behind them and asks the reader to consider the intention that will bring employees to maximum performance. Read the article.

Would you like to share your insight with fellow coaches?

November—Coaching as a business: What are the key things to know in treating your coaching practice as a business? Did you always see it as a business or has it been a transition? As the year comes to an end, what kind of business planning are you doing for the new year?
